The study area is a 61-mile stretch of the Little Miami River, located in southwestern Ohio in the Ohio River drainage basin (Fig. 1). The basin drains a total of 1758 mi 2 . LMR flows through all or part of 11 counties including Greene, Warren, and Hamilton, and a number of municipalities such as Xenia, Beavercreek, Wilmington, and Cincinnati.In the 1800s, frontiersmen built mills at Clifton Gorge. In the 1960s, the Little Miami became Ohio's first official scenic river, though that didn’t stop the river from becoming more polluted.
