Tara Westover was born on September 27, 1986, in Clifton, Idaho, U.S., to a Mormon survivalist couple, Val and LaRee Westover. She grew up with her five older brothers and an older sister. The Westover family was extreme in many ways. Val and LaRee raised their children according to values of Mormonism.Along the way, there were injuries from working in her father's scrapyard, violent assaults from an older brother and painful struggles with her family. I have tried to be compassionate towards LaRee while reading Tara's book because I believe her to be as much a victim of her husband's strange beliefs as Tara and the rest of the family. But these recent developments are difficult to justify. Firstly, it is completely absurd that she is trying to reinvent herself as a homeschooling expert.
